About the writer
Mara Vale writes from the space between appearing fine and feeling overwhelmed.
Quietly Overwhelmed is a lived-experience blog about Level 1 autism, late diagnosis, masking, burnout, relationships, and sensory life.
Why I write
For years, I believed that if other people could not see my struggle, it did not count. I learned to prepare, perform, and recover in private. A late understanding of autism gave me a more compassionate language for experiences I had spent years judging.
I write for the person who gets through the meeting and then cannot speak. For the person who needs plans to feel safe but is called difficult. For the person whose calm face hides a nervous system working far beyond capacity.
Being unseen does not make the struggle unreal.
What you will find here
These essays are personal, not universal. They are an invitation to recognize the effort behind masking, the complexity of “low support needs,” and the relief and grief that can follow a late diagnosis.
